SREC MEETING REVEALS DISASTROUS FINANCIALS AT RPT
The quarterly State Republican Executive Committee meeting was held in Austin this past weekend, with many new SREC members attending their first meeting in their new roles.
While I was unable to attend, many reports indicate that the meeting was staggeringly unproductive and unserious.
Due to the tragic passing of his mother, RPT chair Abraham George was unable to lead the meeting, so RNC Committeeman Dr. Robin Armstrong dutifully did.
Apart from basic reports (which are required), the only accomplishment appears to be passing resolutions.
The financial report by the Treasurer indicated that this year’s RPT Convention shockingly LOST $382,000 — an all-time record. Details here. This failure falls on former Chairman Matt Rinaldi. The budget predicted a $100k profit — so they underperformed by $482k. RPT leadership blamed unexpectedly high expenses and claimed revenue was as expected. While state conventions in Texas can occasionally lose money, generally they don’t. Convention serves as a fundraiser for the State Party, as well as an important opportunity to elect officers and SREC members, pass a platform, and unify the party for the general election.
As someone who has been involved in the GOP for 15 years professionally, and who was served as the volunteer Travis County GOP chair for nearly eight years, I am officially calling for the SREC to request a special meeting to authorize an independent audit of the 2024 RPT Convention.
If there was anything inappropriate, we need to know. If not, we need to learn what happened and why so we NEVER lose that kind of money ever again.
It is ridiculous that with 90 days to go before the MOST CONSEQUENTIAL presidential election in our lifetimes, the following things are true:
1) RPT has no GOTV plan (they are asking the Trump campaign, who has one TX staffer, and the excellent Cruz campaign to do their job for them).
2) RPT has not registered ONE NEW VOTER since the new Chair was elected in May. Hundreds of people move to Texas every day, but apparently RPT has ZERO INTEREST in growing the Republican Party.
3) It appears that new chair Abraham George has raised less than $50,000 in new money in the two full months since he has been chair. RPT is living off transfers from other campaigns and the RNC. They simply are not doing the job.
4) RPT chair George told a prominent Republican activist an astounding thing recently. He was asked what RPT’s plan for the election is and he said all they are focused on is the legislative session. The session is important, but the election must be the priority for the next 90 days.
5) RPT does not have another SREC meeting until AFTER the election. So, this was the last one. They should have presented a detailed Get Out the Vote effort, with a budget and new funds raised and pledges to be collected. They didn’t.
The SREC is the governing body of the state party. They must demand better leadership and accountability. We need RPT to succeed and right now they are undeniably failing. Not good.
