RELEASE: TCRP Chair Matt Mackowiak Releases Statement Following Failed Assassination Attempt
Calls for Prayers for President Trump and the Victims, Swift Justice for All Involved
AUSTIN, TX — Travis County Republican Party (TCRP) chair Matt Mackowiak released a statement following a failed assassination attempt at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, PA tonight:
“I hope all Americans will join my wife Amy and I as we pray for the swift recovery of President Trump after the cowardly assassination attempt at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania tonight. The bravery of the Secret Service in protecting the President and immediately neutralizing the cowardly assassin was impressive. Our hearts are broken for the audience member who was apparently killed and the others who were injured.
“President Trump’s defiance and courage in the immediate seconds after the attempted assassination were iconic. He simply will not be defeated. He showed all of us that he will fight, even when he is targeted for political violence.
“This is a scary moment for our nation. Once the dust settles, we will need a full investigation into how this happened at a site that was secured by federal law enforcement. Having served at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2003-2004 and later worked in White House Advance in 2005, I am very familiar with security procedures and U.S. Secret Service policies. There are many questions that will need to be answered and a full after-action report must be issued and publicly released. It may be necessary for a select Congressional committee to investigate this incident.
“I pray we are not entering a period where political violence becomes common in America, as it did in the 1960s.
“In the actions of the assassin, we saw the worst of America. In the response from President Trump and the Secret Service, we saw the best of America. God Bless our country.”
